Understanding ADHD

Living with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Whether you’ve been struggling with symptoms for years or have recently been diagnosed with ADHD, the right support can make a world of difference.

Through personalized care, evidence-based therapies, and ongoing support, we help you build focus, manage emotions, and improve your daily life.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a common neurodevelopmental condition. ADHD symptoms can include difficulty focusing, impulse control issues, and increased activity levels. While it’s often found and diagnosed in childhood, many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD and are often left wondering why work, relationships, and daily responsibilities feel so challenging.

At Healthy U, our licensed therapists specialize in diagnosing and treating ADHD in both adolescents and adults, providing the comprehensive support you need to thrive.

What Causes ADHD?

There is no single cause of ADHD; research suggests it’s a combination of factors, including genetics, environment, and neurology. Premature birth, adversity in early childhood, and even prenatal exposure to toxins could also play a role in increasing the likelihood of developing ADHD.

How Is ADHD Diagnosed?

ADHD diagnosis involves a comprehensive evaluation by one of our licensed professionals. We’ll:

  • Complete a thorough medical and psychological assessment to rule out other conditions
  • Document and review your symptoms, comparing them to standardized criteria
  • Perform cognitive and behavioral evaluations to assess attention and impulse control

Because ADHD symptoms may present differently in adults than in children, it’s important to get evaluated by those experienced with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The right diagnosis is the first step toward meaningful improvements.

How We Treat ADHD

Medication Support

For many, ADHD medications can be a helpful tool in managing symptoms. You’ll work closely with our experienced ADHD specialists to determine if medication is the right option for you.

If it is, there are two main types of ADHD medications we offer here at Healthy U.

Stimulant Medications

The most commonly prescribed for ADHD, stimulants help regulate energy levels. While those without ADHD would see increased energy levels with a stimulant, those with the disorder experience a sense of calm.

Non-Stimulant Options

Non-stimulant options, including certain antidepressants, may be better suited for those who don’t tolerate stimulants well.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Successfully managing this disorder goes beyond medication. Our ADHD treatment plans incorporate various therapeutic approaches to help improve emotional regulation and build coping skills. Your personalized plan may include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This form of talk therapy helps you recognize and change negative thought patterns and behaviors. CBT is especially effective for managing many of the challenges that come with ADHD, such as anxiety, impulsivity, and difficulty with organization.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Focusing on mindfulness, interpersonal skills, and managing distressing situations, DBT can be an effective ADHD therapy option.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

While not a primary ADHD treatment, EMDR is available post-treatment through our network of licensed providers. It can help reprocess traumatic memories and develop effective coping tools that can be applied to everyday life.

Psychedelic Therapy

Healthy U does not offer psychedelic therapy in-house. However, to ensure you can pursue all therapy avenues you’re interested in, we can connect you to licensed providers that perform psychedelic therapies.
