What Is an Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program?

Whether you’re balancing daily responsibilities or are coming out of partial hospitalization treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP) gives you the tools to recover while maintaining your everyday life.

IOP provides the flexible, supportive care you need to overcome mental health or substance use disorders. With a strong focus on building life skills, our program guides you to lasting recovery.

Here at Healthy U, Intensive Outpatient Programming is a treatment plan that allows those facing mental health or substance use disorders to receive care and return home after each session.

IOP is less intensive than inpatient treatment, making it a great choice for those seeking help but looking for flexibility in their recovery process.

Treatment Commitment

Because everyone’s challenges are unique, IOP varies in both structure and time commitment; some may benefit from more sessions or longer treatment timelines than others.

We have three levels of IOP: IOP-3, IOP-4, and IOP-5. You’ll meet with our admissions team, who will complete an assessment to determine the best starting place for your journey; that could be in our IOP program at any of our three levels.

Each treatment program, and any levels within that program, has unique time commitments. Here’s what to expect if IOP is determined to be the best place to start your recovery journey.

IOP-3

You’ll be expected to attend three group therapy sessions per week for a total time commitment of 9 hours each week.

IOP-4

You must attend four group sessions per week for a total time commitment of 12 hours each week.

IOP-5

You’ll be expected to attend five group sessions per week for a total time commitment of 15 hours each week.

Because we know you have commitments and responsibilities that don’t simply disappear when you’re working through challenges, there is some flexibility within this program. For example, it may be possible to occasionally miss a session to handle other commitments.

That said, the more consistent you are, and the better you can adhere to your treatment plan, the better equipped you’ll be for lasting recovery.

Conditions Treated in Outpatient Programs

Mental Health Disorders

We offer mental health treatment IOP that can assist with several conditions, including:

Offering a safe environment for you to process past traumas and current challenges, IOP uses talk therapy to work through difficulties and develop coping mechanisms.

Our group therapy session schedule for mental health IOP is as follows:

Mon-Fri:

9 a.m.-12 p.m. (in-person)

5 p.m.-8 p.m. (in person Tues and Thur, virtual Mon, Wed, Fri)

Saturday:

12 p.m.-3 p.m. (virtual)

Substance Use Disorders

IOP for substance use disorders uses talk therapy to address the root causes of addiction. Through this program, you’ll engage in skill-building classes, develop healthy coping strategies, rebuild your self-esteem, and better understand the dynamics of addiction so you more effectively work through it.

Our substance use disorder IOP can assist those wanting to break free from:

  • Alcohol
  • Cannabis
  • Opioids
  • Hallucinogens
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Inhalants

And many others. Connect with us if you have any questions about what substance use disorders we treat; we’re always here for you.

What If I Need Treatment for Mental Health and Substance Use?

Our IOP has two separate treatment tracks, one for mental health and one for substance use disorder. This ensures you receive the most relevant care with others working through similar challenges.

However, we also know that many struggle with both mental health and substance use. That’s why we also offer a dual-diagnosis treatment program, ensuring we can effectively help all those who turn to Healthy U for help.

Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Programming

  • Flexible treatment: IOP allows you to receive the care you need without putting your life on hold. Because treatment sessions are only a few hours each day, work or school obligations aren’t disrupted.
  • Cost-effective care: Outpatient care is typically more affordable than inpatient programs. To help alleviate financial burdens as much as possible, we work with most major insurance providers.

Family Programming Made Available at No Cost

Mental health and substance use don’t only affect the individual; families and loved ones can also struggle. Healthy U understands the importance of family support in recovery; that’s why we offer family programming free of charge, where family members can attend virtual support groups. The person being treated will not be in these sessions, allowing loved ones to talk freely and openly.

While these groups offer support and guidance on how to best support a loved one battling mental health or substance use, please note that in order to attend, you must get consent from the loved one being treated here.

Our virtual family support group meets Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Support From Our Alumni Community

Upon completion of your IOP, you’ll gain access to our large alumni network. This community is a valuable resource, helping you stay connected to a supportive group of your peers who are also committed to ongoing recovery.

In addition to regular alumni meetings (held every other Monday, both virtually and in person), you’ll have opportunities to participate in fun group activities, like volleyball, bowling, and escape rooms. It’s a great way to maintain meaningful connections while enjoying sober social experiences.
